Important Personalities, Edition 1971 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six special postage stamps with illustrations of important personalities. No special first-day cover GDR honors eminent scientists, writers and artists FRANZ MEHRING was born the son of a conservative Prussian officer on 27 February 1846 in Schlawe (Pomerania). He studied philosophy, philology and history; he was a journalist. Franz Mehring joined the working class and studied the writings of Marx and Engels. He was one of the leading publicists of the left wing of German Social Democracy, the first significant Marxist literary and historical scholar after Marx and Engels. With Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg Mehring counted among the intellectual leaders of the German left. He was co-founder of the Spartakusbund and the Communist Party of Germany. His fundamental historical works "History of German Social Democracy" and "Karl Marx, History of his Life" as well as his versatile and lively writings "Schiller, a Life Picture for German Workers" and "The Lessing Legend" were and are widespread. These scholarly works are still exemplary for a Marxist view full of literature and history. Franz Mehring died on January 29, 1919 in Berlin.
