Berlin Structures The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored postage stamps with illustrations of Berlin buildings. Important buildings in the German Democratic Republic All buildings depicted on the special stamps were badly damaged in the Second World War. Their careful restoration and wise use document the great responsibility of the socialist state for the care and preservation of important cultural treasures of the past in the German Democratic Republic. Alte Bibliothek (20 Pfennig value) The Alte Bibliothek - located opposite the Staatsoper front - was built from 1774 to 1780 after drawings by Georg Chr. Unger by Johann Boumann. The curved facade goes back to designs by Fischer von Erlach, which he made for the Michaeler tract of the Vienna Castle. This most cheerful classical building within the Lindenforum was built after the 7-year war. After the reconstruction of the building, which was destroyed in the Second World War, it was reopened in 1969 as a library and teaching building of the Humboldt University.
