Important Personalities, Edition 1971 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six special postage stamps with illustrations of important personalities. No special first-day cover GDR honors eminent scientists, writers and artists JOHN HEARTFIELD, so called in protest against chauvinism in World War I Helmut Herzfeld, born on 19 June 1891 in Berlin, son of the left-socialist writer Franz Held. Heartfield's political and artistic path led him as an opponent of the first imperialist war and since 1919 as a member of the Communist Party of Germany from painter and commercial artist to discoverer and ingenious creator of the artistic photomontage. Whether as an artistic designer on Max Reinhardt's stages, designer of countless book covers, for example, the Malik-Verlag, as a typographer and poster creator, but above all as a master of photomontage during the Weimar Republic and in exile in Prague, he was the conscious political agitator. With his art, often serving political daydreaming, he proved their imperishable strength. John Heartfield saw thousands of his photomontages against imperialist war, fascism, and reaction included in the revolutionary struggle of the exploited and the peoples. The quarrelsome artist, honored by our Workers 'and Peasants' State, passed away on April 26, 1968 in Berlin.
