Berlin Structures The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored postage stamps with illustrations of Berlin buildings. Important buildings in the German Democratic Republic All buildings depicted on the special stamps were badly damaged in the Second World War. Their careful restoration and wise use document the great responsibility of the socialist state for the care and preservation of important cultural treasures of the past in the German Democratic Republic. Schloß Köpenick (15-pfennig value) This relatively small Baroque castle on the island at the confluence of the Spree and Dahme built in 1681, the Dutchman Rutger von Langevelt. The layout of the castle and the other buildings in the plan follow very freely customary baroque traditions. It was waived on the axis main entrance lock. For this purpose, the castle building is harmoniously integrated into the wider surroundings of the landscape. The lime-red 13-axis facade on the water side is structured in Risalite. The further outstanding middle part is set off with ocher. The building sculptures created foreign artists, probably Italians. The main motifs are cherubs, wild males, caryatids and acanthus leaves. After the restoration of the castle, a museum of applied arts was established here in 1963.
