Berlin Structures The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored postage stamps with illustrations of Berlin buildings. Important buildings in the German Democratic Republic All buildings depicted on the special stamps were badly damaged in the Second World War. Their careful restoration and wise use document the great responsibility of the socialist state for the care and preservation of important cultural treasures of the past in the German Democratic Republic. Marienkirche (10 Pfennig value) This oldest of the surviving Berlin churches was built around 1250. It resembles in the massive tower base, which is built from granite stones, the many village churches built in the Markish environment. In the middle of the 14th century, the longhouse in the shape of the then typical church hall was built from bricks. After a tower fire in the late 18th century, the church was in 1788 a new spire. Langhans, the builder of the Brandenburg Gate, was the designer. During this time, the beauty of Gothic architecture was rediscovered, hence the Gothic form of the copper helmet. In the years 1946 to 1948, the destruction of the war was removed and the church made usable again.
