Already our grandparents knew the Pfefferminzzuckerl the company PEZ, emerged from the family business Haas. Meanwhile, the PEZ candies are available in many flavors and the donors enjoy cult status. PEZ (derived from P-feff-E-rmin-Z) was invented in 1927 by Eduard Haas. He was the scion of a merchant family that was already innovating in the days of the monarchy. Shortly after the end of the First World War, there was already Haas pudding powder, vanilla sugar and Quittin (gelling aid for preserving jam) - PEZ was originally intended to offer smokers a healthy alternative. With the for that time exclusive Mint taste was addressed to adults until the 50s. The PEZ sweets were first offered in small tin cans until Eduard Haas developed a dispenser in 1948 that resembled a lighter - instead of firing, the dispenser donated PEZ candies. In 1949, Eduard Haas also obtained a patent for this development of the first PEZ dispenser. In 1952, another location was opened in Orange / Connecticut / USA. The famous PEZ dispensers came onto the market and a new target group was discovered: the children. Ten years later, the donors made their breakthrough with Disney characters as children's toys. The first license agreement signed in 1962 with Walt Disney, which gave the PEZ donors in the United States cult status, was followed by countless others. It is no longer comprehensible today how many different PEZ dispensers were created. On average, between four and six sets of three to six characters are produced each year. They have become coveted collector's items, which at auctions prices up to 3,000, - US dollars. Not only Disney's creations, but also numerous other cartoon characters adorn the heads of PEZ dispensers, e.g. Asterix, Looney Tunes, Hello Kitty, Sponge Bob or Star Wars, but also the Empress Sissi, the world-famous composer Mozart or the rock legend Elvis. The first PEZ dispensers were followed in the 1950s by numerous PEZ vending machines, which, through their lovely appearance, pointed out the sweetness inside. It was unique that the PEZ machine with the offered goods identified. The smiling face of the PEZ lady, in the typical blue and yellow uniform, literally walked around the world. Today, the machines enjoy cult status and can be auctioned for up to $ 5,000. The history of PEZ, but also the idea, the concept as well as the design of the PEZ dispensers are continuously included in international publications about brands and design.
