Cityscapes - District Cities of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored special postage stamps with cityscapes of district towns from the north of the GDR. Special Cancellation from April 5 to June 4, 1988 District Cities in the North of the GDR By depicting district towns from the north of the GDR on special postage stamps, the German Post pays tribute to cities that make significant contributions to our country's economy and considerable respect for their higher education and universities. Extensive resources are spent by the state to restore and preserve unique historic buildings and architectural ensembles. New residential areas surround the old city centers and carry the handwriting of resourceful hard-working citizens. 90 Pfennig value: Bergen In the center of the island Rügen lies Bergen, district town in the district Rostock, with 13 200 inhabitants. Bergen is the commercial and traffic center of the island, is conveniently located on the transit route Berlin-Stralsund-Mukran and Saßnitz. The food industry, the woodworking, clothing and construction industries, as well as supplying the numerous holidaymakers, determine the city's production base. A district hospital, a cultural center and a technical school for agriculture are of supraregional importance. From the Ernst Moritz Arndt tower on the 91 m high moraine hill of the Rugard, the visitor has a wide panoramic view of the island. The coat of arms comes from the oldest city seal of 1613, indicates the place name as "city on the mountains" out. The lion was the heraldic animal of the Principality of Rügen.
