In addition to supplier companies for shipbuilding, food processing companies, construction, wood, glass and paper processing, the VEB Mathias-Thesen-Werft is one of the largest GDR shipyards. Six railway freight ferries for the largest integration project between the GDR and the USSR in the field of transport are the shipyard's latest products. The second largest overseas port in the GDR specializes in the handling of potash, grain, wood, chemicals and general cargo. Important institutions of the city are the engineering school and the medical center. Particularly worth seeing is the large market square with its magnificent gabled houses, among which the "Old Swede" as the oldest town house in the city, a late Gothic brick building to call.
