Cityscapes - District Cities of the GDR The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored special postage stamps with cityscapes of district towns from the north of the GDR. Special Cancellation from April 5 to June 4, 1988 District Cities in the North of the GDR By depicting district towns from the north of the GDR on special postage stamps, the German Post pays tribute to cities that make significant contributions to our country's economy and considerable respect for their higher education and universities. Extensive resources are spent by the state to restore and preserve unique historic buildings and architectural ensembles. New residential areas surround the old city centers and carry the handwriting of resourceful hard-working citizens. 1.20 mark value: Greifswald Greifswald in the Rostock district has 61,300 inhabitants and is the second oldest university city in northern Europe. The economic structure is determined by the nuclear power plant "Bruno Leuschner" (Lubmin), the VEB Nachrichtenelektronik and other companies. In addition to the Ernst Moritz Arndt University, important institutes and technical colleges have been set up in Greifswald. In the course of the development of industry and science, the city was expanded by new residential and industrial areas. Meaningful is the reconstruction of the historic old town and the harmonious classification of new residential buildings in industrial construction. Historical sights include the Town Hall (14th and 18th century), the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, the St. Mary's Church, the St. Jacob's Church and the main university building. The emblem dates from the time when Duke Wartislaw III. from Pomerania-Demmin the place had raised to the city.
