Special Cancellation from April 5 to June 4, 1988 District Cities in the North of the GDR By depicting district towns from the north of the GDR on special postage stamps, the German Post pays tribute to cities that make significant contributions to our country's economy and considerable respect for their higher education and universities. Extensive resources are spent by the state to restore and preserve unique historic buildings and architectural ensembles. New residential areas surround the old city centers and carry the handwriting of resourceful hard-working citizens. 1.20 mark value: Greifswald Greifswald in the Rostock district has 61,300 inhabitants and is the second oldest university city in northern Europe. The economic structure is determined by the nuclear power plant "Bruno Leuschner" (Lubmin), the VEB Nachrichtenelektronik and other companies. In addition to the Ernst Moritz Arndt University, important institutes and technical colleges have been set up in Greifswald.
