The Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal DDr. Franz König, has shaped an entire era. Franz König was born on August 3, 1905 in Warth near Rabenstein an der Pielach, Lower Austria, as the eldest of nine children. After graduating with honors from the collegiate grammar school in Melk, he studied philosophy, theology and ancient Persian religion at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Over the years, he learned ten foreign languages. Three years after receiving his doctorate phil. Franz König was ordained a priest on October 29, 1933; theol. From 1934 to 1937 was king chaplain in the diocese of St. Pölten in the parishes Altpölla, Neuhofen an der Ybbs, St. Valentin and Scheibbs, from 1938 cathedral curator and youth ministers in the diocese of St. Pölten. After his habilitation as a Privatdozent for Religious Studies in the field of the Old Testament sciences Franz König worked from 1945 as a religious professor in Krems and from 1948 as a.o. Professor of Moral Theology in Salzburg. On August 31, 1952 Franz King was ordained a bishop in the cathedral of St. Pölten. On May 10, 1956 he was appointed Archbishop of Vienna. He led the Archdiocese of Vienna until 1985. On 15 December 1958, Franz König was replaced by Pope John XXIII. admitted to the College of Cardinals. From 1965 to 1981, Cardinal König was head of the Vatican secretariat for the non-believers. Cardinal Franz König fell asleep gently on 13.3.2004.
