Mariazell, a place on the border of Lower Austria and Styria, is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in Europe. The tradition as a place of pilgrimage is based on a papal proof of mercy from the year 1345. The basilica of Mariazell houses with its high altar a work of art of special beauty and the statue of mercy from the time around 1150. It is among all preserved Marienstatuen of Austria not only the oldest, but also the most worthy. Traditionally, Post & Telekom Austria edits a stamp at Christmas time each year. The Christmas stamp 1997 is dedicated to the place of pilgrimage Mariazell. The brand image shows the Grace Madonna by Maria Zell.
