The motif of the special postage stamp depicts the Nativity of the "Verdun Altar" in Klosterneuburg Abbey. The enamel altar is one of the most valuable and famous works of art of the Middle Ages. Completed in 1181 by Master Nicholas of Verdun, it is the technical highlight of medieval enamel art. Forty-five enamel plates adorn the pulpit with an overview of the contemporary history of the Old and New Testaments. Under Probst Stephan von Sierndorf (1317-1335) the enamel decoration was removed from the pulpit and rebuilt into a winged altar. Six enamel plates were added.
