The Wiener Festwochen, to be understood as a "festival for all", begins each year with the grand opening party on the Vienna Rathausplatz in front of the festively lit town hall, where thousands of people perform open-air and with free admission. The program of the Wiener Festwochen includes music theater and theater performances, concerts, dance, ballet, performance, exhibitions, symposia and readings, as well as exceptional top productions in the guest performance area. Particularly noteworthy in this context is the care of contemporary drama and musical works. The Wiener Festwochen, which had over 180,000 visitors in 1997, will take place this year from 8 March to 17 June.
