The stamp shows a card from the Austrian National Library (16th century) on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus on October 12, 1492. In the decades following its discovery, the American continent was often the subject of cartographic records. The European knowledge of America at the beginning of the 16th century was first reproduced on the manuscript map of Juan de la Cosa, a former travel companion of Columbus. The first printed map of the "New World" is the world map of Giovanni Matteo Contarini from 1506.The stamp motif shows a representation of Sebastian Müller (1488 / 89-1552) from 1538. It is the first North and South America united and as own continents with the name "Novus Orbis" (New World) to see.
