Austria's church prepared for a special event in 1983. Pope John Paul II had announced his visit to the Austrian Catholic Day of this year. He arrived in Vienna on 10 September in Vienna and celebrated with thousands of people a series of events around the Katholikentag. "In the Cross is Hope" was the main theme of a major event on the Vienna Heroes Square. The festive service on the site in the Danube Park was under the motto "Our hope is Jesus Christ". Before returning home, the Pope visited the Marian Shrine of Mariazell on 13th September. One year of preparation preceded the 1983 Katholikentag, whose main celebrations took place in Vienna from 9 to 11 September. The preliminary phase was completed on June 5, 1983 with the "Sunday of the invitation". At that time Austria's bishops again urged the Catholics of the country to come to Vienna for the Katholikentag. Austria's bishoprics, Catholic organizations and groupings, as well as interest groups and associations, carried out no less than 25 major symposia and study sessions in the year of preparation, in which the contents of the Austrian Catholic Day 1983 were dealt with. The special postage stamp shows the symbol of the Catholic Day, cross and anchor.
