The motif "King Kaspar hands gold to the child" is taken from a stained-glass window in the sacristy of the Basilica of St. Gereon. It is attributed to the master who created the famous central window in the choir of the Cologne Cathedral. The sacristy, built on the south side of the long choir, is a rectangular room covered with two cross vaults from around 1320. On its east side are two four-part windows with rich tracery. The construction period of the sacristy almost coincides with the consecration of the Cologne cathedral choir in 1322. The same perfect form as there is shown here in the small. In the lower section of the two four-part windows are stained glass from the construction period. Shown are saints under canopies and a Christmas picture with the adoration of the kings. The figures represent the important stage of the High Gothic period in the iconography of the Martyrs of St. Gereon. The almost disembodied figures are real representatives of the refined court culture of the time. The framing decorative forms in Gothic lines harmonize with the rich robes and stylized curls of elegant appearances.
