During the Roman Empire was between 90 and 260 AD, an artificial border line between the Rhine and the Danube. The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes marked and controlled the two ancient provinces of Upper Germania (Germania superior) and Raetia (Raetia) in today's south or southwest Germany. In 2005, UNESCO added this 550 km section of the Roman outer border to the World Heritage List. With a total area of 250 km2, the former Roman sites - legion camps, castles, watchtowers, walls and earthworks - together form the largest archeological monument in Germany.
