Since the beginning of 1998, the southern part of Hainich is the 13th national park in Germany. The Hainich, one of the largest contiguous deciduous forest areas in Central Europe, is located in the west of Thuringia between Mühlhausen, Bad Langensalza and Eisenach. Thanks to decades of use as a military site, the shell limestone plateau, apart from smaller country roads, is almost untouched by traffic routes on its 15,000 hectare area. The military past was also the basis of a hardly influenced by humans development of flora and fauna, which brought the Hainich the title "jungle in the middle of Germany". Numerous hiking trails make it an interesting destination for tourists today.
