The Deutsche Bundespost is again publishing a stamp block »For Us Children« this year. Which child did not invent the most original creatures in his imagination? Today, at a time when children are so affected by the age of dinosaurs and their many forms, it is easy to imagine dragons and other fabulous figures. »This is the tradition since antiquity, where a multitude of mythical creatures were already known. They are handed down to us through poets and works of sculpture. Even medieval paintings or buildings have often been associated with such mythical creatures, such. Eg depictions of hell with devils or temptations of saints. On the other hand, how much lovelier is the friendly-looking dragon on the stamp, who cheerfully and lovingly rises into the air. In this ride into the air, the males with their feathered crowns hold each other and also to the dragon. In the marginal figures one thinks of connections such as pig, squirrel kangaroo or a frog head on six feet, and also the other two figures in their absurdity should delight the children. (Text: Dr. Lydia Bayer, Toy Museum of the City of Nuremberg)
