The organization of the European postal administrations and post companies "Post-EUROP" has selected as a common theme for the European brands in 1999 "national and nature parks". Motive of the German block issue is the National Park Berchtesgaden. This year's EUROPA block will also be the continuation of the series »German national and nature parks«, which started in 1996 and aims to draw attention to the beauty and diversity of the landscapes of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Berchtesgaden National Park is located in southeastern Germany, surrounded on three sides by the German-Austrian state border.
