The objects of the collection for plastic and arts and crafts come mainly from the art and treasure chambers of princes and emperors. If the works of art were originally hoarded for investment purposes or for representative purposes, collecting activities based on antiquarian and aesthetic aspects began in the Renaissance. Two Kunstkammern in particular are considered to be the basis of the collection for sculpture and applied arts: the Kunstkammer Kaiser Ferdinand I in Vienna and the Kunstkammer am Schloss Ambras by Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol. The illustration on the stamp shows an ivory-carved equestrian statuette of the approximately 15-year-old King Joseph I. Among the front hooves of the horse is a male figure, symbolizing the rage, which is overcome by the power and virtue of the young king.
