"If you paint only one good picture, as long as you live, it was worth the whole life." - This quote comes from the Austrian painter Marie-Louise von Motesiczky, with their "self portrait with red hat" the longest existing special stamp series, the very popular series "Modern Art in Austria", now finds its aesthetically valuable continuation. The original oil painting, created in 1938, measures 50.7 x 35.5 cm and is owned by the London-based "Marie-Louise of Motesiczky Charitable Trusts". About the person: Marie-Louise von Motesiczky (1906-1996) was an artist who had paid little attention to her for many years and who could afford to work for herself regardless of the prevailing art market; It was only recently that the value of their work began to be recognized. Throughout her life she remained faithful to representational painting, whereby the influence of the great German expressionist Max Beckmann is unmistakable. Thematically, Motesiczky's main focus was on portraiture, as well as creating pictures of her garden, landscapes and still lifes. Born on October 24, 1906 in Vienna, Marie-Louise von Motesiczky began to study as a young woman at the renowned Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. Already in this time she met Max Beckmann, who became her mentor and lifelong friend. After the invasion of the National Socialists in March 1938, she fled with her mother first to the Netherlands, where she had her first solo exhibition in 1939. Shortly thereafter, she fled via London to Amersham; After the war, she finally settled in London's Hampstead. Here she also deepened her acquaintance with Oskar Kokoschka, whom she had already known from her youth days in Vienna and who had been a friend of the family, but from her intimate relationship with Elias Canetti originated two important artistic works: Canetti's posthumously published collection of aphorisms "Notes for Marie -Louise "and Motesiczky's portrait of Canetti, which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London. On June 10, 1996, the great painter died in London, but she was buried in her native city, at the Döblinger cemetery in Vienna. On the occasion of its centenary, its work was honored in an international traveling exhibition in several important museums, and the ORF produced a comprehensive TV portrait. Three years ago, in 2009, the Motesiczkyweg was named after her in Vienna-Floridsdorf.
