Archeology is the science of antiquity and early civilization, as far as they can be developed from monuments, finds and written sources. It arose mainly from the interest in the cultural and artistic monuments of Greek and Roman antiquity. As the true founder of classical archeology is considered Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768), who recognized the ancient monuments as sources of historical lore. Today, archeology uses state-of-the-art aids, such as image flights or geophysical measuring methods, which make it possible to "make the invisible visible", for example, plans of settlements and grave sites.
