Antarctic Research Station of the GDR "Georg Forster" For the popularization of the Antarctic research station of the GDR "Georg Forster", the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued a multi-colored special postage stamp. Special cancellation from March 22 to May 21, 1988 The Antarctic Research Station of the GDR With effect from 1 July 1987, the research base of the GDR Academy of Sciences was converted into the Antarctic research station of the GDR "Georg Forster" and decided from autumn 1987 onwards 28 years of participation in Soviet Antarctic expeditions to send independent Antarctic expeditions. The 35-pfennig value honors these events by showing a partial view of the Antarctic station from its founding phase in 1976. It is located in the central Queen Maud Land belonging Schirmacheroase, in the Antarctic summer largely snow and ice-free area of 60 km2 size , The exact position of the station is described by the geographical coordinates 70 ° 46 'South and 11 ° 50' East. The viewer's gaze is directed towards the station from the north and illustrates constructive details. 20-foot metal and wooden containers form the working and residential complex. The containers are provided with a largely cold bridge-free insulation and have already been set up in the home for various uses. They have emergency exits in the roof and rest on heavy steel sleds, which allowed a relatively simple transport of fully assembled modules from the ship berth at the ice shelf barrier at Cape Ostry over the 100 km wide ice shelf to Schirmacheroase and secured a quick assembly to the station complex. The steel carriage construction provides wind fluid integrity under the buildings, reducing the risk of excessive snowdrift formation. The containers are grouped windmill wing-like, with the wings lying in the image plane each consist of two parallel containers. The partial view shows on the left a residential, in the middle a measuring and right the community container. The cabin, which can be seen on the right, formed the diesel electric station in the early years. It was later replaced by a much larger power plant integrated into a four-foot 20-foot metal container building. In its current form, the Antarctic station "Georg Forster" offers up to eight winterers and up to five seasonal participants in GDR Antarctic expeditions sufficient working and living conditions. Since its foundation, meteorological, atmospheric-physical, isotopic-physical, geophysical, geological, hydrological, biological and medical researches have been carried out under the responsibility of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. More than 100 scientists and technicians have been deployed since 1976. In addition, numerous other scientists from the GDR made significant contributions to the exploration of the 6th continent in the context of Soviet Antarctic expeditions in many other places in the Antarctic.
