The Vienna Museum of Natural History celebrated a special anniversary on April 30, 1976. Although the history of the natural history museum goes back several centuries, an event was of particular importance for the museum. Exactly 100 years had passed in 1976, when Emperor Franz Joseph I appointed the well-known New Zealand researcher Ferdinand von Hochstetter as the first Intendant of the Natural History Museum. Before, the concept had been approved for the new Museum am Ring. Due to the special layout of the rooms and the way in which the exhibition collections were designed, the museum was given its own character. The idea of guiding the visitor to the inanimate world through the many millions of years of development and development of life has since proven itself. The Vienna Natural History Museum is still one of the largest and most important in the world today. Many basic research has started from here. The big jubilee exhibition of the year 1976 should provide an overview of the history of the museum and a scientific showcase. As a symbol for this exhibition and for the present special postage stamp, an animal species extinct 130 million years ago, an amonite, was selected.
