The golden eagle is a bird of prey and belongs to the family of hawk-like. It inhabits open landscapes that provide sufficient food supply and have rock walls or older nesting stock. The sexes of the golden eagle differ significantly in size and weight: While the female reaches a body length up to 100 cm, the male is smaller by about 10 cm, the wingspan varies between 190 and 230 cm. Once the species was widespread, today it only occurs in mountainous areas, in Austria in the Alps. The worldwide population of the golden eagle is estimated at about 250,000 animals.
