The Waldrapp belongs to the family of the Ibisse. He is a sociable bird, seeking contact with peers and forming colonies of up to over a hundred animals. For a long time the Waldrapp was threatened with extinction. A few years ago, the Konrad Lorenz Institute in Grünau im Almtal successfully launched a release project: for the first time in more than 350 years, nois alike flew from central Europe to a winter region. The brown bear is one of the largest land-based predators. But it has been decimated or even eradicated as a potential human hazard in many places. Within the German-speaking world only one group of these animals live in Austria, in other Alpine regions occasionally wander around specimens. It is a common motif in heraldry and returns in many fairy tales, fables, literary works and films.
