The barn owl is one of the most widespread bird species. More than 30 subspecies of Barn Owl are known, the individual groups differ in appearance and behavior. The barn owl owes its name to the heart-shaped facial veil, which is usually white to light gray. It is up to 35 inches tall and reaches a wingspan of up to 85 centimeters. The darker colored females are slightly larger than the males. Preferred habitat of barn owl are savannas, semi-deserts and tree-steppes, in Central Europe also open agricultural landscapes.
