With the first Vespers of the Benedictine Festival (March 21, 1089) began in Melk the monastic life, which is given since then without any factual or even legal interruption through all ups and downs of human history through to today. The year 1989 was therefore also occasion for extensive celebrations for the 900th anniversary of the monastery and the issue of this special postage stamp. The brand motif shows a detail from Paul Troger's fresco in the Kolomansaal of the monastery and thus also the occasion for the anniversary. Margrave Leopold II introduces the monk colony from Lambach under the first abbot Sigibold in Melk.
