The deed of foundation of 10 January 1140 represented only the first step to the establishment of the today's colony Seckau dar. 1141 the first Probst was selected. 1143 confirmed the foundation by Pope Innocent II and the construction of the Seckau church in Romanesque style begun. In the 15th century, the church got its gothic interior design under the prizes of Andreas Ennstaler and Johannes Durnberger. In the 16th and 17th centuries the mighty Renaissance building of the abbey was erected. Emperor Joseph II initiated a period of decline by abolishing the abbey on May 13, 1782 and relocating the Diocese of Seckau to Graz. Only in 1883, with the Benedictines, monastic life moved into the orphaned walls of the abbey.
