Even in protohistoric times shallow places were used by the Danube arms next to today's Korneuburg as a power and trade route. The origin of Neuburg is an old Roman fort whose name is unknown. Through recent discoveries, its history, from the 1st to the 5th century, is well known. Early bank settlements originated around 791 and formed the foundation for the by Emperor Henry III. Niwenburg was founded in 1042. The first customer of the existence of Neuburg gives at least a certificate of Henry III. dated 8 November 1042. The first entry, in which Neuburg is expressly named as a city (nova civitas), dates from February 2, 1136 and can be found in the founding document of the Mariazell Monastery in the Vienna Woods. The medieval Korneuburg was a place of such importance that it was equipped with strong fortifications. In 1450, the heavily fortified town of Korneuburg was declared a princely fortress. The emergence of today's name Korneuburg is associated, among other things, with the buoyant grain trade, which helped to shape economic life through the centuries.
