The 800th anniversary of the first documentary mention of today's Carinthian capital Klagenfurt is the occasion for the publication of this special postage stamp. The entry was made towards the end of the 12th century in a privilege of the Carinthian Duke Ulrich II Klagenfurt, however, was already existent before the first nomination, if not in its present place. Rather, it was located about one and a half kilometers north of today's city center at the eponymous ford across the Glan. The new Klagenfurt was built at a traffic-favorable point, at the intersection of the running in west-east direction road from Villach via Völkermarkt to Marburg with the traffic route in north-south direction from St. Veit to Loibl and on to Ljubljana and Trieste , In 1252 Klagenfurt was called "city" for the first time. After a steady upswing, the trading city in 1514 was reduced to ruins by a fiery conflagration. Emperor Maximilian I handed over the fire ruins from his sovereignty to the estates - a unique case in the history of German settlements. These built Klagenfurt according to modern knowledge in its still preserved form again. The brand image shows the Old Square in Klagenfurt.
