Unfortunately, the exact date of founding the mint in Vienna can not be exactly reconstructed. The most important indication for the restriction of the period is the ransom for King Richard the Lionheart, which Duke Leopold the V at the end of the year 1193 or early 1194 received. These silver bars were subsequently cashed in Vienna. Therefore, one can assume that the Vienna Mint was founded in 1194. The location of the mint changed several times over the centuries until it moved to the Heumarkt in 1839, where it is still today.
