At the confluence of the Lieser and the Drau, at the foot of the Goldeck and on the eastern edge of the Lurnfeld, Spittal forms the center of Upper Carinthia. Already in the Neolithic the space around the today's city was settled. After the Celts, the area was 15 BC. Taken over by the Romans, who built the city Teurnia on the Lurnfeld. In the 6th century, the city was destroyed by the uprising of the Drautal alpine Slavs. In the course of the Bavarian-Franconian takeover in the 9th century, the county Lurn, which encompassed the entire Upper Carinthian area. The center was the royal court Lurn, which was in the vicinity of Spittal. On 11 April 1191, the city Spittal was first mentioned in a document. This historic date is also the occasion of the celebrations for the 800th anniversary of the city of Spittal. From the urban aspect, especially the art historical important Renaissance Castle Porcia (16th century), which is located directly in the center, worth mentioning.
