In 1182 Francis was born the son of rich cloth merchant Petrus Bernardone in Assisi. He first led the life of a wealthy young cavalier. But gradually, after a few heavy blows of fate, a change occurs in Francis. A vision in Spoleto, in 1205, makes him turn back from a campaign, it is the beginning of his conversion. He renounced paternal prosperity, renounced the world and decided to lead a future life in poverty and the gospel. The order he founded was officially recognized by Pope Honorius III in 1223. In September 1224 Franciscus receives the stigmata in La Verna as the physical expression of a constant identification with the crucified and a life-long mental process. There, where once his life had begun in penance, at the Portiunkulakapelle in Assisi, Francis died on the evening of October 3, 1226. Two years after his death he was canonized in 1228. The stamp shows the motif "The sermon of St. Francis of Assisi", from a manuscript of the early 14th century from Liège.
