On August 13, 1935, the German sports aviator Elly Beinhorn managed a record flight that made her world famous: In 13.5 hours she flew 3,470 kilometers from Gliwice (now Gliwice, Poland) on the Asian side of Istanbul and after a short stay back. When landing at the airport Berlin-Tempelhof she was received by an enthusiastic crowd. Even before this one-day flight, Elly Beinhorn had completed sensational flights: in early 1931 a flight to Africa, 1931/32 a world flight (the oceans were crossed by ship) and 1933 a flight to the former German colonies in Africa. Born on May 30, 1907, Elly Beinhorn died in November 2007 as the grande dame of German sport aviation at the age of 100 in Munich.
