Born on February 4, 1871 in Heidelberg, Friedrich Ebert became a member of the trade union during his travels as a trained saddler and joined the Social Democrats. In 1905 elected secretary of the central SPD party executive, Ebert took over 1913 the function of one of the two party chairmen. In 1912 he was drafted for the constituency of Elberfeld-Barmen in the Reichstag, where he was from 1916 co-chairman of the SPD faction. With his election as Reich President on 11 February 1919 by the German National Assembly, a head of state was determined by democratic means for the first time in Germany. Friedrich Ebert died on February 28, 1925 in Berlin as a result of an untreated bowel disease.
