The geologist and politician Eduard Suess was born on 20 August 1831 in London. He was a full professor of geology at the University of Vienna and at the same time a real member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences. His first book, "The Land of the City of Vienna", which dealt with the context of geological conditions and the water supply, was the beginning of his increasing attention in the scientific environment. He received even more attention with his book "The Origin of the Alps", in which he anticipated the new knowledge about the construction of the earth, which will be explained later in his monumental work "The Face of the Earth". It is still the most monumental monument in the history of the earth, containing four volumes and dating back some thirty years. Suess was also politically active, beginning with the admission to the Vienna Municipal Council until his involvement in higher education policy always endeavoring to oppose the suppression of the free spirit. He died of pneumonia on April 26, 1914.
