As the oldest social insurance in the world, the Knappschaft has decisively shaped the German and European social systems. It was created because of the particular dangers in mining and the resulting need for social protection. In 1260, the Hildesheim bishop Johann I von Brakel assured the St. John's brotherhood on the Rammelsberg near Goslar his protection in supporting poor and weak miners and their survivors. Thus, the Knappschaft laid the foundation for the development of pension and health insurance, the survivor's pension, the first pension formula, the social security obligation, the joint contribution payment of employees and employers and the justification of social self-government.
