Already finds from the Neolithic period (2000 BC) prove the colonization of the Lienz area at this time. The immediate predecessor of the city of Lienz was the settlement of St. Andrä on the hill, on the left side of the Isel river, for which the name Lienz appeared in the form of "in loco Luenzina" in the years 1022 to 1039. In the Imbreviaturbuch entry of the Bozner notary Jakob Haas of 25 February 1242 Lienz is first called "civitas" "city". This date is also the occasion of the celebrations for the 750th anniversary. Of particular importance in the development of Lienz is the historical fact that the Counts of Gorizia had their residence here (built 1252-1277). After the extinction of this family Grafen lost the city's meaning and came in 1501 in the possession of the Counts of Selva-Rodenegg. They built the building on the special stamp - the Liebburg (1605-1608) - at the lower town square. After its adaptation, this building is now used by the city administration as a town hall.
