Already prehistoric, Roman and early medieval settled, Oberdrauburg is first mentioned in 1240 as a "Trabuch castrum" and thus as a fortified place. Located on the Drau, in the Carinthian Oberland, Drauburg was already a fortified defense system in antiquity, which offered its inhabitants protection against the threats of this time. Of particular importance for economic development were the toll revenues, which in the years 1496 to 1498, for example, amounted to 3,437 ducats. At least six ducats could be bought with a ducat. In 1625, the citizenship of Oberdrauburg got her coat of arms awarded by Count Georg Salamanca, with which all documents emanating from the municipality should be certified.
