In 1914 a military airfield was built in Klagenfurt. The military air operations took place until the end of the First World War. In view of the commitments made (State Treaty and Treaty with the Allied Commission) and for the further development of aviation in Austria, the land pledged by the military administration in Annabichl was permanently expropriated in favor of the Austrian Federal Treasury (aviation). Thus the condition for the enterprise of a civil airport was created. On May 17, 1925, the first Austrian airline Klagenfurt - Graz - Vienna was officially opened. As a plane served a six-seater Junkers cock F13. After the interruption of civil aviation during the Second World War, the Dutch KLM opened in May 1953 again the first scheduled flight on the route Amsterdam - Dusseldorf - Klagenfurt. From 1958, the airport was gradually expanded to become a regional landing site for medium-range aircraft. It now has a runway with a length of 2,720 m, which practically allows the landing of all civil aircraft currently in use. The airport is Carinthia's prestigious gateway to the world, meeting all the requirements of international air traffic.
