The Chambers of Workers and Employees have been representing the legal interests of Austrian employees for 75 years. In 1848, the liberal bourgeoisie succeeded in enforcing the founding of so-called "commercial and trade chambers". As a counterbalance to this legally established overall representation of the economy, representatives of the workers' associations of the Chambers of Commerce subsequently demanded similar institutions. After the First World War, the position of the working class in Austria was strengthened to such an extent that on February 26, 1920, the Chambers of Labor could be unanimously approved by the parliament.
