After the Ice Hockey World and European Championships held in Vienna in 1967 and 1977, the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation was entrusted by the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1987 for the third time with the hosting of the Group A Ice Hockey World and European Championships. This major sporting event took place from 17 April to 3 May 1987 and coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation. The first beginnings of "Hockey on ice" already existed in Austria in 1898; However, the official founding of the association took place only on 14 January 1912. On 18 March this year, the ÖEHV was admitted to the international ice hockey association. The inauguration of the artificial ice rink Engelmann (1909) and the Wiener Eislaufverein (1913/14) played an important role in the development of the association and ice hockey in Austria. Until 1922, the game was played in Austria with the ball on the ice ("Bandy"), from the season 1922/23, the final conversion to the game with the disc and thus on the Canadian ice hockey. After overcoming the obstacles created by the First World War, there was a lively upward trend, which led to the first major successes of the Austrian national team. In 1927, Austria became European champion in Vienna and the European and World Championships held in Krynica (Poland) in 1931, and again occupied the third place in the World Cup.
