The meteorological observatory on the Sonnblick completed on 2 September 1961 the 75th year of its existence. It lies in 3106 m height on a steep summit of the central alpine mountain range of the Hohe Tauern. The construction of the observatory dates back to the initiative of the world-famous meteorologist Julius von Hann and the idealism and energy of a simple man from the Rauris valley, Ignaz Rojacher. He had worked his way up from the simple carriage slider to the owner of the then gold mining in the Rauris Alps. Under the direction of Rojacher and with the financial support of the Austrian Meteorological Society and the Alpine Association, the summit house was completed in the summer of 1886 and was solemnly inaugurated and handed over to the company on the 2nd of September of the same year in the presence of 80 participants. In 1899, the administration of the Sonnblick Observatory was transferred to the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics in Vienna. Since then, apart from providing the daily observation data for the practical weather service, it has above all been carrying out important scientific tasks.
