Excavations already in the year 1000 show the settlement of the area of today's town of Hardegg. To secure the Thaya border against Moravia fortified settlements were built in the Middle Ages, which consisted of castle, church and local chapter. Such a castle town this defense line was also Hardegg, as the rectangular floor plan still proves today. In 1299 Hardegg was first mentioned in the church register as a city. Over the centuries, several counts were masters over Hardegg. In 1590, the city was awarded the city seal by Count Prueschenk Hardegg. The stamp shows the coat of arms derived from the seal with the crenellated silver defense tower and a golden lion in the blue field. Next to it is the view of the castle with the city below.
