67th Interparliamentary Conference Berlin, Capital of the GDR, 1980 For the 67th Inter-Parliamentary Conference in Berlin, the capital of the GDR, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued a multicolored special postage stamp. 67th Interparliamentary Conference Berlin 1980, GDR The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is one of the oldest political international organizations. It has existed since 1889. Its aim is to promote personal contacts between the members of all parliaments, constituted in national groups, and to unite them in joint action, to ensure the full participation of their respective States in world peace and international cooperation, in particular through the support of the goals of the United Nations, to ensure and maintain. It expresses its views on all issues of international character that are appropriate for solutions through parliamentary action. Of particular importance after World War II was the membership of groups from socialist countries and young nation states. The number of member states has doubled since then. The Inter-Parliamentary Union currently comprises 88 national groups. Of the socialist countries, members of the IPU are the USSR, the CSSR, the People's Republic of Poland, the Hungarian People's Republic, the People's Republic of Bulgaria, the Socialist Republic of Romania, the Mongolian People's Republic, the People's Democratic Republic of Cuba, Yugoslavia and since 1972 the GDR. Through the active participation of the interparliamentary groups of the socialist countries, the IPU has developed into an organization that offers good opportunities within its sphere of action for the struggle to solve fundamental international political issues. The IPU has taken useful decisions in this direction in recent years and made valuable recommendations. The IPU provided major impetus for the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. She herself led three regional conferences (1973 in Helsinki, 1975 in Belgrade, 1978 in Vienna) with the groups of the European states, the USA and Canada. The IPU organizes two regular meetings each year. In line with the organization's objectives, the IPU is constantly exploring the possibilities of contributing to solving international problems. Thanks to the initiative of the socialist countries, more and more such fundamental issues of international development are dealt with as: - Arms limitation and disarmament; - continuation and irreversibility of the relaxation process; - Elimination of the hot spots in the world; - removal of the remnants of colonialism and racism; - supporting the just struggle of the national liberated countries for their political and economic independence; - Solidarity with the progressive forces in the world. The Spring Meeting is preparing the Interparliamentary Conference, the highest body of the IPU, which will be held each autumn. It takes place alternately in the capitals of the member states. In 1980, the delegates meet for the 67th Interparliamentary Conference from 16 to 25 September in the capital of the GDR, Berlin.
