The "Golden Bull" is a law book from the year 1361, the Emperor Charles IV negotiated with the electors of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. As the Basic Law represents the legal basis of the Federal Republic, the Golden Bull laid down the legal foundations of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. The text fixed the process of electing the king and future emperor by the electors. Among the innovations was that henceforth no unanimous but a majority decision was sufficient and the consent of the pope was no longer necessary. The regulations were valid until the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1806. The name Goldener Bull is derived from the golden capsule (Latin for "bulla aurea"), which protects the actual wax seal.
