The Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded for the first time in 1901. Winner was Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the award ceremony (10 December 1901) and in recognition of the merits of the discoverer Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, the DBP issues a commemorative stamp. The importance of the discovery of "X-rays" - known abroad as the X-ray designation chosen by Röntgen - for medicine, industry, mineralogy, and structural research is well known. With the discovery, a new era of physical research began. The impulse to search for further new rays was given. The development eventually led to the discovery of radioactive substances and thus to the findings on the energy expressions of the atomic nuclei.
