Friedrich Emich (1860-1940), a native of Graz, is regarded as the founder of modern microchemistry, which deals with the study of chemical phenomena in the application of small amounts of substance. His life and work was closely linked with the Technical University of Graz, where he not only studied but also worked as a lecturer in inorganic and general chemistry for decades. Already in 1911 he was awarded the "Lieben Prize" for his achievements. In 1918 he was elected Correspondent and 1928 Real Member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences. In 1931 he received the Grand Decoration of Honor of the Republic of Austria.
